Awake NY x Merrell: this old-fashioned hiking shoe is brand new
The shoe looks like a natural fit for Awake NY, which cleverly plays with 1990s designs in its collections. And the label’s founder, Angelo Baque, longtime Supreme veteran, has mastered the art of bringing a solid and unexpected perspective to his collaborations. (For a collaboration with Timberland last year, Awake NY opted for a vintage trekking boot instead of the historic brand’s more obvious six-inch work boot.) Here, the waterproof suede upper from the Jungle Moc is decked out in understated gray, while the curved curve and air-cushioned sole receives the two-tone gray and beige treatment. Some subtle details are also included, like pops of red and a small Awake logo on the side. Overall, this is a stylish shoe that feels closer to the city streets than the rugged hill. The shoe is slated for release on June 18 via Awake NY and Dover Street Market.
If you’ve followed Baque’s work at Supreme, where he worked for a decade before launching Awake NY, you probably know the creator knows that the smartest collaborations are the ones that catch you off guard. Choosing Merrell’s Jungle Moc and bringing it into the coveted streetwear space, that’s precisely what happened here – and damn it, does that look good.
