Black Widow’s Post-Credits Scene Explained: How She Sets Up The New MCU Team
Black Widow has lowered the curtains on Natasha Romanoff’s timeline, giving actor Scarlett Johansson a perfect farewell in the MCU, an OG Avenger. The latest Marvel offering also opened up several possibilities for the future of Nat’s sister Yelena Belova (Florence Pugh) in the universe.
The Black Widow post-credit scene gives us a glimpse of what lies ahead in Yelena’s story, with the surprise appearance of a character who was recently introduced to the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
Black Widow is set between Captain America: Civil War (2016) and Avengers: Infinity War (2018), and ends with Natasha walking away to join her fellow Avengers to fight Thanos. Now we are well aware of what happened in Endgame, with Nat sacrificing his life to save his best friend Clint Barton and get the Soul Stone.
Cut to post-credits from Black Widow where her sister Yelena Belova stands by Natasha’s grave, presumably after the events of Endgame. She even hisses the same way she did when she was a child. with her sister hissing her back. And as the audience skips a heartbeat, waiting for a possible response from Nat, all you hear is silence.
In this moment of mourning, Yelena is seized by Countess Valentina Allegra de la Fontaine (Julia Louis-Dreyfus) who was recently seen in The Falcon and the Winter Soldier, offering a contract of employment to John Walker ( Wyatt Russell). In the Black Widow scene, she hands Yelena a photo and says, “I have your next target – I thought I was handing it over. Maybe you’d like to shoot the man responsible for your sister’s death. The photo is of Clint Barton aka Hawkeye (Jeremy Renner), who Yelena says is the reason for Natasha’s death.
This post-credit scene hints at Yelena’s return to Marvel’s upcoming webcast, Hawkeye, which airs on Disney Plus later this year. He also tells us that Yelena and John Walker were recruited by Countess Valentina Allegra de la Fontaine who once had ties to HYDRA. This adds more fuel to the speculation that Val will be responsible for the MCU’s incarnation of the Dark Avengers, given that she already has a Captain America and a Black Widow replacement.
In an interview with Variety, Scarlett johansson spoke at the end of the road for her Natasha Romanoff. She said: “I am really happy with the work I have done in my last ten plus years at Marvel. I feel like I’m coming out on a high note with a movie I’m incredibly proud of. I feel like my work with Natasha is over, if it is.
Director Cate Shortland also revealed that the post-credits scene was not part of the original plot and was shot during the Black Widow covers in early 2020. The film’s original production schedule was May through September 2019. .
Florence Pugh added that the scene cements Yelena’s position and the fact that she is finally in control of her life for the first time. The actor told Variety, “She’s going to continue what she’s good at, and although her sister isn’t here, she’s back to work. If you look at her costume and the way she dresses, it shows someone thriving. So for me it was really wonderful to go ahead and see that she survived. But, of course, that sets up a whole other challenge – which is Natasha’s combat partner. “
Black Widow arrived July 9 in North America and several other territories. Disney also released the film on its Disney Plus streaming service as well as in its Premiere Access section for $ 30 on the same date.
Fans in India will have had to wait to watch the superhero action as all of the Premiere Access movies are made available to its subscribers by Disney after a few months. And that’s the day that Disney Plus Hotstar releases them in India.
