Rooney has become one of the hottest names in the literary world, thanks to the resounding success of his first two novels detailing the experience of coming of age. His first book, Conversations, follows Frances and Bobbi, students at Dublin University, best friends and former lovers who perform poetry together. Their tight-knit dynamic is threatened by the bond they forge with an older married couple: journalist Melissa and actor Nick.

Frances and Nick’s relationship becomes secretly romantic. Bobbi finds himself defending Melissa and distancing herself from Frances. And the two friends take sides in the marriage of the other couple, to the detriment of their own relationship. There are themes on class differences, political philosophy and sexuality, as well as a parcel oral poetry.

Here’s how Hulu describes the plot:

Conversations with friends follows Frances, a 21-year-old college student, as she navigates a series of relationships that force her to face her own vulnerabilities for the first time. Frances is observant, cerebral and lively. His ex-girlfriend, now best friend, Bobbi is confident, outspoken and convincing. Although they separated three years ago, Frances and Bobbi are practically inseparable and perform oral poetry together in Dublin. It is during one of their shows that they meet Melissa, an older writer, who is fascinated by the couple. Bobbi and Frances start spending time with Melissa and her husband, Nick, a handsome but reserved actor. As Melissa and Bobbi openly flirt, Nick and Frances embark on an intense secret affair that surprises them both. Soon the affair begins to test the bond between Frances and Bobbi, forcing Frances to reconsider her sense of self and the friendship that is so dear to her.

Who will be behind the camera?

If you find yourself addicted to Normal people series, you’re in luck. Several of the directors, producers and screenwriters of this project return to adapt Conversations. Oscar nominated director Lenny Abrahamson (Bedroom) will return to direct several episodes, along with writer Alice Birch, executive producer Ed Guiney and Rooney herself as executive producer.

Newcomers to the project are Leanne Welham, who will direct alongside Abrahamson, and screenwriters Mark O’Halloran, Meadhbh McHugh and Susan Soon He Stanton, who will join Birch.

“I feel so excited to be collaborating with four such stunning actors to bring Sally’s brilliant novel to the screen,” Abrahamson said in a statement. “Over the past few months, it has been a privilege to work alongside Element Pictures and our amazing team of writers to bring the scripts to a point where we all feel so excited to start filming. I will be joined by a world class team (many of whom have worked on Normal people) and supporting actors and I’m especially happy to have Leanne Welham on board. I have admired her work for a long time and I have no doubt that she will bring a lot of talent and subtlety to the episodes that she directs.

However, with most Normal people team turning their attention to a new project, that means any potential Season 2 of the hit romantic drama is likely on hold. In an interview with Hello! magazine, Guiney confirmed, “[Conversations With Friends is] what we will focus on next. But maybe later we’ll come back to Connell and Marianne. In a separate interview with Hollywood journalist, he said the new adaptation will be “a cousin of Normal people in a way, but it’s also quite different.

Who is in the cast?

Similar to Normal people, Conversations will likely keep its distribution relatively small. Frances will be played by newcomer Alison Oliver, a graduate of the Lir Academy Drama School in Dublin, where Normal people star Paul Mescal is also a graduate. American honey escape Sasha Lane will play Bobbi, while Joe Alwyn (The favourite) plays the role of Nick and Jemima Kirke (Girls) plays Melissa.

When will the show premiere?

The 12 half-hour episodes are slated for release on Hulu in 2022. The show is currently filming in Ireland, with the first photos of Alwyn and Oliver on set leaking on July 4.
