Doja Cat opted for neon feathers and a motorcycle-inspired zip-up look all the way through and Cynthia Erivo stunned in a sparkling silver dress with gold accents by Louis Vuitton at the Grammys as Sunday’s Big Music Night provided a moment of luxury fashion for stars.
Dressed in Roberto Cavalli, Doja’s revealing look featured cat-claw zippers on each arm and a feathered skirt.
“I want to be the cat lady, so let me be that,” she said.
Erivo’s dress featured a low cut-out front with a gold bib effect on top and a gold belt, while DaBaby brightened up a radically clean red carpet in a mustard and green floral suit from Dolce & Gabbana. Erivo didn’t touch the mat, but she made a statement nonetheless. Her dress was adorned with over 60,000 glass beads, crystals and sequins. She completed the look with jewelry from Tiffany & Co.
Dua Lipa also shone, in a Versace pink sequin dress with a butterfly motif. The bodycon dress featured cutouts at the hips and a sexy high slit.
“It was really cool to collaborate,” she said of the look.
Billie Eilish matched her long nails with a loose pink and black pants look from Gucci, her hat and mask match as well.
DaBaby, her mother, Linda, by her side in red, styled her costume with a wide-brimmed green hat with red underneath. He was present in person, but earlier created a red carpet moment on Instagram with his daughter, as no children were allowed at the Los Angeles show.
Best Children’s Music Album winner Joanie Leeds did something similar away from home in New York.
“I actually created a stage and a rehearsal and a red carpet,” she told reporters in a virtual press conference before the show. “We all walked the red carpet and had a photographer here and took some really good pictures.”
Leeds wore a multicolored sequin dress by Nicole Miller and she slipped her silver heels on to show them off to the camera.
“Just because we’re virtual this year, I wasn’t going to wear my hoodie,” said Leeds, a first-time Grammy Award winner.
Due to pandemic precautions, the “red carpet” was not the usual mass of cameras and television crews. A few selected outlets were authorized on site to conduct live interviews – at a safe distance from each other.
The host of the evening, Trevor Noah, showed up for the clean carpet in a classic black Gucci tuxedo, while nominee Debi Nova went tall – and pink – in a minidress that had a huge train and tropical details, by Georges Chakra. Phoebe Bridgers wore a black dress embellished with a beaded human skeleton, by Thom Browne, and Megan Thee Stallion wore a bright orange strapless princess look with a high side slit and huge back bow and train from Dolce & Gabbana. Her Chopard choker completed the look.
“I wanted to do pop. I wanted to look like a Grammy, ”Megan said.
Nandi Howard, Associate Fashion Editor at Essence, praised the style moments provided by Megan and DaBaby.
“I can’t wait to see D&G work more with hip-hop artists. Megan looked so regal in her orange dress, and tonight she was wearing her outfit effortlessly. I hope to see her more often in sewing. She wears it very well, ”she said.
Howard also praised Lizzo, who shone in a pink mermaid look to present an award and previously wore a short strapless ruched meerschaum dress from Balmain. She was dripping with Bulgari jewelry.
“We normally see cutting edge dresses at the Grammys, but leave it up to Lizzo to change them up in the best way,” Howard said.
Jacob Collier said he went for comfort in a floral Stella McCartney turtleneck and a red suit.
“I have never been asked about clothing before,” he said. “I feel like a rock star.”
In Dundas, HER wore a mid-calf burgundy dress with matching wide leg pants.
Jonathan Evans, the style director for Esquire, saw a healthy dose of the 1970s soaring pass through menswear, much of it at Gucci. Bruno Mars and Anderson. Paak donned leisure suits for the debut of Silk Sonic.
“The chunky cuffs and flared pants can, I admit, seem a little intimidating, or like a throwback to the bad old days, but when you see the way guys like Anderson .Paak, Finneas and Harry Styles wear it, it feels fresh, ”he says.
All three wore Gucci. Evans said of Styles’ look: “A jacket with a pattern that looks like one of your grandma’s favorite tea cozies is one thing, but a cropped jacket with a gigantic lapel that channels Nana? This is the sort of thing Styles seems to make wearable. “
Styles then performed in a black leather suit – which needs a shirt – with a green boa around her neck. He was wearing a purple boa with his short jacket.
Noah Cyrus spoke to reporters in a cream dress with a huge cape effect that wrapped around her face. He was a Schiaparelli, said a grim, Grammy nominated first-time Cyrus. She said she was honored to be the first to wear it. Cyrus mourns the recent passing of his grandmother.
“I just wish my grandmother could have seen this,” she said of her appointment.
