Ed Sheeran is back to remind everyone that he is one of the best watch collectors on the planet
welcome to Watches of the week, where we’ll follow the rarest, craziest and most coveted watches spotted on celebrities.
Just two months before the pandemic shut down most of the world, Ed Sheeran decided to shut down his own. He took the break, he wrote on Instagram, to “travel, write and read.” While the break was great for Sheeran, it was a drag for watch enthusiasts: Sheeran is one of the most trusted watch enthusiasts in the world. . He even introduced himself as an obsessive in a quaint love letter to the collectors community on Hodinkee. In the note, Sheeran reveals that he became addicted to watches in part because of the famous watchmaker monster John Mayer, who, it seems, indoctrinated him into the watchmaking church. “[He] guided me that way and that by collecting, educating me on everything related to watchmaking, ”writes Sheeran. “He told me about vintage stuff, things with a Tiffany stamp, the history of the brand, unique pieces. The list goes on. ”Fortunately, as the headline of that BBC interview says,“ Ed Sheeran is back! ”And so are his watches. For his first big comeback in the public eye, Sheeran wore a doozy watch, a watch. that it takes a collector’s eye and in-depth knowledge to truly appreciate.
Ed Sheeran’s Patek Philippe Calatrava
Sheeran’s Calatrava, released in 2020, was designed to commemorate the opening of Patek Philippe’s new manufacturing facility in Plan-les-Ouates, Switzerland, the previous year. The particularity of this Calatrava, beyond the fact that it is limited to only 1000 pieces, is the material of the case. Because Patek specializes in the type of yellow / rose / white gold and platinum watches that go well with pinky-up parties, collectors appreciate all the more casual stainless steel pieces that flow. Most of them belong to the more sporty models of the brand, the Nautilus and the Aquanaut. Before this piece, there was only one other stainless steel Calatrava. For a Patek Philippe obsessed like Sheeran, this watch is a piece that can be worn everyday, and as here: with a T-shirt.
Richard Mille from Diddy RM 11-02
This week all the stars came to Quality Control CEO Pierre Thomas’ birthday party in Atlanta: Gucci Mane, Lil Yachty, Diddy and Diddy’s RM 11-02. Richard Mille of Diddy seems to have enough power to blind passers-by. Oddly enough, the 11-02 is one of the brand’s simpler versions, at least by Richard Mille’s unusually high standards for funk. In its basic form, the watch is a GMT, which means it has a second hour hand designed to follow another time zone (you can see the yellow highlighter second hour hand on Diddy’s watch under other angles). The function makes this Richard Mille watch perfect for those “who travel all over the world,” reads the brand’s website. The replacement crystal means that Diddy’s watch no longer fulfills this function. GMT or not you know what really says you have the cash to travel all over the world, though? A Richard Mille covered in diamonds.
Richard Mille RM030 by James Harden
Harden knocked down the Boston Celtics in awesome outfits – I must appreciate a matching sweatpant-hat combo! – a smile and a watch that kills. This RM030 is a rare version of the model in white gold, with numerous diamonds and what appears to be a crocodile leather strap. Obviously, Harden loves this watch as much as he loves his patented stepback three: the RM030 is the same watch he gave Lil Baby, with $ 100,000 in cash for his birthday.
Audemars Piguet Royal Oak Offshore by Serena Williams
Williams gave his typical rose-gold Audemars Piguet a break in the first round of the 2021 French Open this week. While she typically performs in a custom-made Audemars – with the crown on the left rather than the right, to keep it from sinking into her skin – she replaced the piece with a white and black version of the watch with an equal amount of bling around the bezel. The fact that this watch has its pushers on the more standard right side explains the honey green sweatband on its wrist acting as a protective barrier. Now that’s a real dedication to watch wear.
Devin Booker’s Rolex Cosmograph Daytona
Something is happening with this black and white panda dial Daytona this year. It’s only June and the world has just opened up and we’ve already seen this piece about Blake Griffin, Giannis Antetokounmpo, and tennis player Stefanos Tsitsipas. This week, it’s on the wrist of new Lakers killer Devin Booker. Already one of the most desirable and coolest pieces in the world, the panda-dial Daytona continues to accumulate even more street cred.
