How Meghan Markle and Prince Harry are doing 6 months after stepping down from the royal family
It has been six months since Meghan Markle and Prince Harry finally stepped down from their roles as royal family and decided to build a new life in Montecito, California with their two children. Ahead of the pocket release of royal reporters Omid Scobie and Carolyn Durand’s Meghan and Harry-centric Discovery Freedom, People devoted this week’s cover story to the Duke and Duchess of Sussex and the couple’s situation on the West Coast.
According to Scobie, Meghan and Harry learned to keep “some of the toxicity on hand and out of the ocean”, per People. Specifically, the British tabloid press in the UK, which relentlessly attacked Meghan as well as the institution of the royal family. In March, Meghan and Harry spoke candidly to Oprah about their struggles with the tabloids.
“They seem to exist in a different place, and that place is a lot healthier,” Scobie said. “Meghan said it was not enough to survive – we are now in the chapter of prosperity.”
Meghan and Harry spoke to Oprah about their experiences at the firm. Notably, the couple claimed that a member of the royal family (not the Queen or the late Prince Philip) feared their unborn son Archie’s skin was too dark. Meghan also revealed that the institution refused to let her seek treatment when she struggled with suicidal ideation, and Harry commented that the family had an “invisible contract” with the British tabloids and were afraid of them. Harry also said Charles stopped taking his phone calls at some point and cut him off financially.
The royal family didn’t like the interview too much and released a terse statement two days later. The statement read: ‘The whole family is saddened to learn how difficult the past few years have been for Meghan and Harry. The questions raised, in particular that of race, are worrying. Although some memories may vary, they are taken very seriously and will be treated by the family in private. Harry, Meghan and Archie will always be much loved members of the family.
