There was a time when going to the gym meant putting on a t-shirt and shorts, a sweatband and sneakers. Who cared about your appearance as long as you were comfortable? Well, thanks to social media, a workout is now an excuse to have fun on the latest trendy sportswear and post selfies on Instagram.
What you wear will likely depend on how you plan to train. There’s also the round trip to the gym to consider, as there’s a good chance you’ll be donning a new outfit once you’ve finished your workout.
Read on for a guide to staying stylish at the gym, even during a strenuous HIIT class.
Cardio training usually leads to excessive sweating – or at least it should if you push yourself hard enough. Whether you’re running on the treadmill, taking a spinning class, or allowing yourself to be assaulted by a personal trainer, the right fitness clothes are essential.
First, look for a supportive sports bra if you are a lady. Sports bras control the natural shaking that occurs when we move up and down or side to side. Not only is it more comfortable for you (no black eyes if you’re a taller woman), but it also protects your delicate breast tissue from damage.
Look for technical clothing that wicks moisture away from your skin. You need clothing that is snug, but not too tight or restrictive. Go for multiple thin layers so you can remove layers when your workout gets more intense and add layers when you cool down. Some items like a hoodie are useful for starting and ending a workout.
Choose patterns and colors that flatter your skin tone and hair color. There are some really nice ones sportswear brands there, to suit most budgets. One tip to keep in mind is that it’s best not to wear an outfit that matches just one bright color. For example, if you’re wearing a hot pink cropped top, pair it with black leggings to avoid looking like a popsicle.
Choose the right shoes
The right shoes are essential. If you’re a running fan, buy the best running sneakers you can afford, ideally training shoes that suit your gait. Wrong shoes can lead to injury, which won’t improve your training program much.
Yoga or Pilates classes
Yoga or Pilates classes are less intense, but comfort is still important.
Wear layered outfits for your classroom warm-up and cool-down elements. Look for clothes that allow you to stretch out comfortably. Some people prefer stretchy yoga pants while others prefer loose sweatpants – the choice is yours.
Many people like to wear socks for comfort. You can personalize your outfit with cute fancy socks from funatic.com.
Accessorize with a cool gym bag
Tote bags are the best type of gym bag because they’re large enough to carry everything you need like a towel and a change of clothes. Buy a stylish metallic bag from Accessorize or a camouflage bag from Juicy Couture.
Follow the tips above to make sure you stand out in the gym for all the right reasons.
