Inside Saif Ali Khan-Kareena Kapoor’s Pataudi Palace: When the actor said he had to ‘go back’ to his house, later clarified
Saif Ali Khan is often called “the Nawab” by many of his fans. However, the scion of the Pataudi family had once revealed in an old interview that “there was no legacy”, only a privileged upbringing. He also revealed that he had to ‘recover’ the house which he is supposed to have inherited, the Palais Pataudi.
In an old interview with Mid-Day, Saif said, “I learned that you can’t argue with stories whether they’re true or not. People have a certain obsession. Moreover, even [with] clumsy [palace]when my father [Mansur Ali Khan Pataudi] deceased, it was leased to Neemrana Hotels. A man [Nath] and Francois [Wacziarg] used to run [the hotel]. Francois is deceased. He said that if I wanted [the palace] back, I could let him know. I said: I want it back. They organized a conference and said, okay, you have to give us a lot of money! »
He added that he had to “buy out” the house with his own money. He added that he therefore earned the money to do so. “So even the house that I’m supposed to have inherited was reclaimed with movie money. You can’t live off the past. At least we can’t in our family, because there was no nothing. There is history, culture, beautiful photographs; and, of course, a bit of land. It was a privileged upbringing. But there was no legacy,” said he explained.
Later, in a Bollywood Bubble interview, Saif clarified his statements and said that he signed a lease. “It wasn’t really a buyout, it was like erasing a lease.” He added that money hasn’t come easy to him, but he also recognizes his privilege and doesn’t want to compare himself to others less fortunate than himself.
In another interview, Saif explained his arrangement. “My father rented it and Francis (Wacziarg) and Aman (Nath), who ran a hotel there, took care of the property. My mum (Sharmila Tagore) has a cottage there and she was always very comfortable,” Saif said. “It was a fair financial arrangement and contrary to rumours, I didn’t have to buy it back because I already owned it,” Saif said. After his father died in 2011, Saif Ali Khan entered into the lease.
During the Kapil Sharma Show, Saif had opened up about being a landlord and joked that his income from his ancestral home would go to his mother Sharmila Tagore. He said, “Vo meri maa le leti hain (My mother takes all the money).” Jokingly, he added, “Main sirf naam ka Nawab hoon (I’m just a Nawab in name).”
