welcome to Watches of the week, where we’ll follow the rarest, craziest and most coveted watches spotted by celebrities.
Last weekend was essentially a Watch of the Week holiday because John Mayer, our patron saint of heavenly watchmaking, stepped onto the stage at the Grammys with beautiful hair and an even better watch. The watch in question is a Patek Philippe 5270G, crafted in platinum, with a perpetual calendar and chronograph, and sells for over $ 130,000 at auction. The Mayer and Patek perpetual calendars have a long history together. In his very first “Talking Watches” video with Hodinkee, in 2013, Mayer said that a previous version of this watch with a white dial was “as good as it gets”. Mayer clearly did not give up this belief. He has collected a few more of these watches over the years, including one set with baguette diamonds. The Grammys-worn 5270G Mayer is the successor to these iconic watches and part of Patek’s historic lineage of perpetual calendar watches. Also this week, Luke Doncic discovered a new brand of watches and Mayer was not the only one wearing a very beautiful Patek to the Grammys.
John Mayer’s Patek Philippe 5970P
Mayer is beloved among watch collectors because he fully embraces the nerdery of it all – an approach exhibited in his love for this piece. “I love the American Courier-typewriter typeface on a [calendar watch]”He said in his second” Talking Watches “video. “He’s a banker from the 80s The wolf of Wall Street nonsense, and I really like it. Of course, the 5270 is loved for more than its police force. Like its predecessor, this watch is larger than the previous era of Patek’s mega-popular perpetual calendar watches. The sizing made the watch easier to read and made the addition of a tachometer – the ring of numbers along the outer edge used to measure speed – possible. This racing car driver tool also makes the watch look much sportier. Mayer even calls it the Patek version of Rolex’s Daytona.
Carmelo Anthony’s Hublot Big Bang King Power Porto Cervo Marina 50th anniversary Costa Smeralda
Well, the name of this watch is definitely a mouthful. Let’s break it down. Porto Cervo Marina is an Italian seaside resort located at the northern end of the island of Sardinia. One of the very first lines on Porto Cervo’s Wikipedia page describes it as “a luxury yacht magnet and billionaire’s playground.” In 2012, to celebrate the resort’s 50th anniversary, Hublot helped organize a party. Elton John played for the big cats and Hublot released two limited edition watches, including the one worn here by Carmelo Anthony.
Lil Baby Patek Philippe 5396G Annual Calendar
In just one night earlier this year, Lil Baby walked in of them Richard Mille watches at high price. Neither made the cut for the Grammys red carpet, as the rapper went from his wild luxury sports watches to this immaculate Patek Philippe. This watch was launched in 2006 with a design worn on a late 1930s Patek Calatrava. 15 years later, and more than eight decades since the original design, it still looks great.
Hublot Big Bang Gold ceramic by Luka Dončić
Luka Dončić, who wore a gold Audemars Piguet Royal Oak for most of his young career, has apparently discovered a new brand of watches he’s excited about. This week he wore Hublot’s Big Bang with a gold case and black ceramic dial. And even though I missed it the first time around, a closer inspection of Dončić’s All-Star weekend cup shows a flash of orange bursting from under his sleeve. Only Hublot wants to make a watch like this. Clearly someone had a great time at their local authorized dealer.
Justin Thomas’ Rolex Daytona
Thomas is a bit of a surprising standard, assuming you had an obscene amount of polo, khakis, and vintage jerseys qualifying for this title. He has two walk-in closets stocked with his equipment, including a large collection of watches. Among these pieces is this white gold Daytona, the Mayer Patek 5790 leaf. Watches of the week: a big circle!
