Kangana Ranaut on the North versus South debate: “Save our screens from international films, don’t fight among yourselves”

There has always been a debate between films from the North and films from the South in the country, and recently it has intensified with the back to back successes of Pushpa: The Rise, RRR and KGF: Chapter 2. Indian cinema is no longer limited to Hindi films as Telugu, Malayalam, Tamil, Kannada, Punjabi and Bengali films, among other industries, are being applauded for their content and depth. However, this debate between industries divides the stars of the two regions, which is not fair according to Kangana Ranaut. She thinks that this competitive spirit should be against Hollywood films and not against Southern or Northern films.

Calling herself the “greatest cheerleader” of south indian movies, Kangana hints that she was the one who started the topic that our regional cinema should do well. “What we need to do collectively is fight against Hollywood and save our screens from international films because the American film industry has single-handedly destroyed the German, Italian, French and English film industries. We must not fight between we, whether it’s southern film industries like Kannada, Tamil Telugu or Punjabi, we have to encourage them all,” advised Kangana, who promoted his action drama Dhaakad.

Kangana is not only against the demarcation of film industries in India, she also wants people to stop ‘attaching films to sexuality’ and calling them ‘male-centric’ or ‘women centered‘. She said, “We should get out of that mentality to judge a movie if it’s female-centric or male-centric. You have to watch a movie like a movie and not attach any sexuality to it. So far, women have contributed so much to movies, but the credit always goes to men. So, now, as women thrive in movies, we shouldn’t marginalize and discourage big heroes from participating in our growth.

Kangana Ranaut The spy thriller Kangana Ranaut Dhaakad hits screens on May 20.

Kangana’s co-actor in the film, Divya Dutta added, “The day this demarcation (between Northern and Southern films is no longer there, everything will be normal.” The two actors were speaking at the launch of the trailer of Dhaakad in New Delhi.

Kangana Drives Dhaakad is set to hit theaters on May 20. The film has Kangana as a spy named Agent Agni. The film also stars Arjun Rampal, Divya Dutta, and Saswata Chatterjee, among others. It’s helmed by rookie director Rajneesh Ghai, who Kangana says was warned not to work with her because “Mera toh kyunki sabne naam kharab karke rakha hua hai (They ruined my image)”. But Rajneesh was determined to work with the actor and did not give up on her.

Concluding on Dhaakad, Kangana said, “In Bollywood, the action always comes from a policeman or ‘mahaule ke gunde’. This genre (Dhaakad) of stylish action spy thrillers are not made in India, apart from women, these films are not made even with male actors.
