Kehlani on T-Pain, shopping with daughter Adeya and decorating the house

What did Kehlani do this summer? Besides releasing a hit song with T-Pain and a new partnership with American Express, the singer is pretty scary. “I’m just having fun,” she told ELLE before taking the stage at American Express X Saks Star Island Summer in the Hamptons. “I think I’m past the dark, weird part of life for now. It is very bright here [in my head], so it will be very light musically.

It’s been just over a year since Kehlani released his second studio album. It was good until it wasn’t during quarantine. Fresh out of a lockdown hiatus, the singer is more than ready to perform in front of fans again. “It’s exciting because I’ve been playing in front of people virtually for a little while now, so I feel like I’m getting a sense of normalcy in my career,” she adds.

That doesn’t mean they weren’t busy. The multi-hyphen is also a director, producer, songwriter and, most importantly, the mother of his two-year-old daughter Adeya. With so many projects going on, I asked how they were doing with their AmEx Platinum card, which was recently relaunched with perks like Camp Platinum at Equinox, shopping benefits at Saks Fifth Avenue, and dining experiences with Resy.

“I’m a fan of good interior design,” they said. “I like the silly little things you put in your house that no one will notice except you.” It’s just stuff that gets my attention, and I’m like ‘I need this.’ I fail to understand that this makes sense.

Upcoming, the singer is talking about releasing an album during a pandemic, going shopping with her daughter, and putting her own spin on T-Pain’s classic, “Buy U a Drank.”

You released your album It was good until it wasn’t during the pandemic. How was it ?

It was a trip, as we finished it just before quarantine began. We had to figure out how to maneuver and still release an album through that which was a really cool thing to do because we had to get creative.

You wear so many hats. How does she juggle different projects with motherhood during her forties?

It’s really fun. I think every hat I wear inspires the other hat to go the extra mile. I’m happy to be in a place where I learn a lot, because I miss that aspect of school a bit, so it was cool to have that in another area of life.

What is your preferred AmEx member benefit?

Being able to find a place to travel, all the access to some nice travel stuff is really cool.

Are you going shopping with your daughter Adeya?

We do. He’s a toy person for sure. Wherever there is a toy aisle, she’s horny. She’ll just want to go crazy.

Is there a children’s product that is worth it?

You want your kids to have quality stuff because they break things so easily and mess them up. You want to make sure it’s washable; you want to make sure it’s fixable; and dropping it once doesn’t explode it into a million pieces. Oh, a good diaper bag. I know it’s for both of us, but it must have a lot of compartments and be able to hold a lot of things. It is a good one.

How has the past year affected your music?

It allowed me to spend a lot of time on myself. Things get a lot more introspective in general when you spend time with yourself.

My summer song is “I Like Dat”. What was it like working with T-Pain?

Shout T-Pain. It was so cool. He’s really humble, almost to a fault, where you have to constantly remind him that he’s T-Pain. All the time I’m just like, “I’m on a ‘Buy U a Drank’ flip with T-Pain” and I vividly remember going to college and being at my eighth grade dinner dance. , and “Buy U a Drank” coming up, and everyone’s crazy.

He sent [the song] and he was like, “Yo, listen to this. I want to know if you’re down. I heard it and I was like, “Are you kidding.” I sent him the verse very quickly because I was so excited about it.
