Kendrick Lamar’s First Big New Release Has Arrived
May will be a big month for Kendrick Lamar. On the one hand, the critically acclaimed rapper’s long-awaited fifth studio album, Mr. Morale and Big Steps, will be released on May 13. Second, it seems likely that we’ll be receiving a slew of goodies – from merch to music videos to who knows what else – in the coming days to prepare for the release. And Getting the Ball Rolling is a white-hot sneaker collaboration between Lamar’s company pgLang and Converse.
Lamar founded pgLang in 2020, along with longtime collaborator Dave Free, as a hybrid of a record label, creative studio, and production house, blurring the lines between music, l art and fashion. This is the first time pgLang has teamed up with Converse, and Lamar and Free have made sure to deliver the goods. Two of Converse’s most iconic silhouettes, the Chuck 70 and Pro Leather, are remixed with a minimalist, cream-colored twist. Each shoe is elevated with hiking-style eyelets, distinct asymmetrical rubber polish, and exposed stitching detail. (There are also cryptic text graphics that appear throughout the sneaker.) The end result is an upscale, fashion-forward take on two classic Converse silhouettes you know and love.
Lamar tends to be quite selective about the companies he works with and the products that carry his association. Which is to say, a sneaker co-signed by Lamar only comes along once in a while. (His Nike sneakers have been feverishly loved — and rare.) So it’s no surprise that these sneakers sold out in a flash when they dropped yesterday. However, you can snag the Chuck 70 and Pro Leather on StockX for now and be sure to keep your eyes peeled for what else Kendrick has up his sleeve this month.
