For a fictional amphibian, Kermit the Frog has some bona fide streetwear. At the end of August, the iconic green puppet was pictured in a Supreme box logo t-shirt, and the posters were plastered across New York City. Then the streetwear juggernaut released t-shirts, skate decks, and adorned Kermit stickers. (Products now appear on resale sites with price tags of $ 1,500.) A few years ago, Bearbrick also gave the iconic green frog the streetwear toy treatment. And now Kermit is getting his own Adidas sneaker.
It’s been a big year for Adidas collaborations: with slash-style filmmaker legend Jonah Hill, with Italian fashion powerhouse Prada, and of course, the brand’s continued partnership with Pharrell. We can now add Kermit the Frog to the list. One of the Three Stripes’ most beloved sneakers, the ever-classic Stan Smith, is remixed with lots of Kermit details. We’re talking lime green heels, Kermit graphics on the upper and the Muppet signature “It’s not easy to be green” slogan sewn onto the heel. In addition, the classic low tennis shoe is also made with 50% high performance recycled material. (Talk about going green!)
It’s also not the first time Kermit has teamed up with the Three Stripes. In 2006, and then again in 2011, the character and the brand released a pair of slightly cartoonish sneakers: Stan Smith Adicolors and Superstar II, respectively. However, it’s the first one that looks like a wearable sneaker, rather than something you might buy at a toy store. It’s been a minute since Kermit the Frog first appeared in the style and sneaker world, but this Stan Smith collaboration proves he’s back to reclaim his title as the reigning king of streetwear amphibians.
