Machines for Freedom Summerweight Long Sleeve Jersey Review
With constantly rising temperatures and snow melting off the trails, I have summer mountain biking in my head again. As I have mentioned in other reviews, Machines for Freedom is one of my go-to brands for the best women’s cycling gear. Their long sleeve summer jersey is one of their flagship offerings and a staple in my ever growing pool of cycling gear. Here are my detailed thoughts on this jersey.
First of all, can we talk about this print? Over the past two years I’ve collected a few Machines for Freedom swimsuits, but this jaded rose print has a special place in my heart. I love teal and I love flowers so this couldn’t be more perfect for me. This top was the very first cycling jersey I bought, and the moment I put it on I knew it was right for me. It’s still my absolute favorite!
The Machines site suggests they make “the most flattering cycling jerseys ever,” and I tend to agree. Seriously, this top is one of the most flattering pieces in my entire active wardrobe. It makes me feel like a million bucks – wearing that little number makes me feel like a professional pilot and a track supervisor, although I’m still learning a lot.
I bought my swimsuit in size XXS. My Machines short-sleeved jerseys are XS, but the fabric of the long-sleeved summer weight version has a little more flexibility. The XXS is skin-tight, but the material is stretchy enough that it won’t be binding. Zipped full height, the neck is snug, but again, is not binding. Considering how well short sleeve jerseys look good on me in XS, and based on the size chart, I imagine the summer weight in XS would suit me as well. Machines suggests reducing the size if you are between sizes or petite – I agree with that recommendation.
As with most jerseys, this one is a bit longer at the back than at the front. There is a silicone elastic band at the back hem to help keep everything in place. As you can see in the photos, the body and sleeve length fit me very well (I’m 5’3 ‘). The length through the body reaches the high hips and the sleeves have very little excess material. While I can’t speak for the other sizes, the proportions of the XXS make it more suitable for small people.
The fabric is smooth and silky to the touch. It is quite luxurious and hugs the skin well. Long sleeves will still be a bit warmer than short sleeves, but the fabric is very light, a bit lighter and thinner than Machines’ short sleeve jerseys. It breathes very well and is comfortable even when the conditions are warm enough. There are mesh panels on either side of the torso and on the inside of the arms, which also helps with cooling.
I usually wear this top on balmy to warm summer days, as well as spring and fall. It looks great under a gilet or jacket on cooler days. When the temperatures get particularly hot, I often take my short sleeve jerseys (the Machines short sleeve jersey review coming soon). The summer weight swimsuit features a UPF 50+ rating, making it the perfect option when I don’t want to mess around with sunscreen or annoying tan lines.
The back of the jersey has a few large open pockets for bottles or other large items. Most sizes have 3 pockets, but the XXS (which I wear) only has 2. There is also a side zip pocket on the right side, above one of the bottle pockets. The zippered pocket is lined with waterproof material and with a little effort it fits my iPhone 11 Pro.
I have covered many, many kilometers in this jersey and I still don’t have a single complaint. I mostly ride on trails and have never had any snags or tears. Even after many washes and wear, it holds up beautifully. The swimsuit in the photos is just over 2 years old and is my most worn swimsuit, but as you can see for yourself it still looks amazing.
Overall I love this jersey and highly recommend it. The fit and aesthetics make me feel like it’s made for me, and it’s executed so well. The equipment of the machines is very expensive, but this jersey was well worth it! The combo of my jaded pink jersey and a pair of essential shorts is basically all I need in my cycling life.
Currently, the summer weight long sleeve jersey is made up of several prints including the jaded rose that I’m wearing here. You can find all Machines jerseys on their website as well as Backcountry and Competitive Cyclist.
