Meghan Markle shows Montecito house and launches 40×40 for its 40th anniversary
Meghan Markle isn’t just celebrating her 40th birthday privately this year. The Duchess of Sussex has announced a new program, 40×40, on her and on Prince Harry’s non-profit Archewell site, focused on mentoring.
Actress Melissa McCarthy joined Meghan (with juggling Prince Harry, who made a last-minute surprise appearance) to announce the program in a video. The two-minute segment gives a rare glimpse into Meghan and Harry’s luxury home in Montecito, as well as the Duchess’s first glimpse since welcoming her second child, daughter Lilibet Diana, on June 4. It also showcases Meghan’s sense of humor. You can watch the video here on the Archewell website.

Meghan shared a note on Archewell explaining why she wanted to create 40×40. She wrote:
As I reflect on my 40th birthday and the many things I am grateful for, I am struck by how one of our greatest and most essential gifts: spending time with loved ones, time to doing the things we love, time spent learning, laughing, growing up, and the sacred time we have on this earth. Among the most precious gifts of time is also the time spent in the service of others knowing that it can contribute to incredible change. At that last point, and with my 40th tour of the sun in mind, it made me wonder: what if we all spent 40 minutes helping someone else or mentoring someone in the need ? And then what if we ask our friends to do the same?
Over the past two years, and in large part because of the COVID-19 pandemic, tens of millions of women around the world have left the workforce, including more than two million women in the United States. the crisis in unpaid work, including schooling and caring for family members. And the latest research shows that fewer women than men will return to work as we recover from the pandemic.
I believe mentoring is a way to help women regain confidence and rebuild their economic strength, and on my birthday I asked 40 friends, activists, athletes, artists and world leaders to help launch a global effort by contributing 40 minutes of mentoring to help women re-enter the workforce. With this time, I hope that they will each help someone move forward in their professional life on their own terms, and I hope that they inspire countless others to give 40 minutes of their time as well.
If you can, join us and commit 40 minutes today to serving others in the way that’s right for you. The time you donate can contribute to a global wave of service and trigger a significant impact in our own communities and around the world.
Archewell announced that the program participants were Adele, Amanda Gorman, Amanda Nguyen, Deepak Chopra, Dr Ibram X. Kendi, Gloria Steinem, José Andrés, Dr Nadine Burke Harris, Sophie Grégoire Trudeau and Stella McCartney. You can read more about the initiative and how to participate in Archewell here.
