Neetu Kapoor-Rishi Kapoor’s engagement was planned by his sister Ritu, prophesied by Dilip Kumar
Rishi Kapoor married his longtime girlfriend Neetu Singh in 1980. The two stars have appeared in several films together and were one of the most sought-after couples in Bollywood. But without Kapoor Ritu’s sister, the two lovebirds would never have taken their relationship to the next level.
In his biography, Khullam Khulla, Kapoor devoted a chapter to his wife Neetu where he mentioned how reluctant he was to tell his parents about Neetu. But his father Raj Kapoor was aware of his love for Neetu, and it was his sister Ritu who “plotted” his engagement in Delhi.
“Although my brothers knew, my parents knew, and pretty much everyone knew, I could never express my intentions to Neetu or them. I wasn’t even sure I was ready for the wedding. I was twenty-seven and still lived with my parents in Chembur. Given how attached we were to each other, no one could understand why I wasn’t asking the question. How could they know that I was fighting a million demons in my head? Actor Bobby wrote in his book.
Kapoor feared marrying Neetu because he doubted the longevity of an actor in Bollywood after marriage. “I often think that I might never have married Neetu, or that we got married much later than we did, without my sister Ritu. Left on my own, I might never have taken our relationship to the next level, ”Kapoor noted.
Kapoor’s sister Ritu invited him to Delhi to attend an engagement ceremony with his family and upon his return to Mumbai the actor had a ring on his finger.
“I had no idea that Ritu had plotted and planned with my friends Gogi (filmmaker Ramesh Behl) and Ravi Malhotra (father of Karan Malhotra, the young director of Karan Johar’s film Agneepath in 2012). At Mumbai Airport, while I was waiting to board my flight, I met Saira Banu and Dilip Kumar, who asked me where I was going. When I told him I was going to Delhi to attend an engagement, Dilip sa’ab joked, “Don’t shoot me quickly. You’re not going to get engaged? ‘ab have been proven to be prophetic, ”reads an excerpt from Khullam Khulla.
Neetu Kapoor turns 63 today. Rishi Kapoor passed away last year after a long battle with cancer.
