New BTS x McDonald’s Meal Comes With A Large Amount Of Merchandise
The response to Travis Scott’s McDonald’s meal, characterized by a vibrant resale economy and ingredient shortages at some McD’s restaurants, has been seismic. But the chain’s latest partnership, with the world-dominating South Korean supergroup BTS (call it BTS x McDonald’s), is designed to make the previous fanfare look like little fried potatoes. The partnership, which launched on May 26, has heated frying oil. In Indonesia, McDonald’s franchises were forced to stop taking orders and packing things for the day because the demand for the meal was so overwhelming. Pieces of the special edition purple wrapper are being sold at multiples of the price of the meal, while some fans work hard to keep the sauce bags and lids in pristine condition.
The meal includes 10-piece nuggets, fries, a coke, and mild and Cajun chili sauces “inspired” by those of the Golden Arches in South Korea, according to McDonald’s. “We wanted people to taste the special sauces that were only available in South Korea,” a member of the RM Group said via email.
But the fruits of the team go beyond food. Like previous McDonald’s collaborations, BTS also includes a handful of unconventional products. Travis Scott’s Gout included a McNugget body pillow, for example. In addition to t-shirts and tote bags, BTS offers pajama pants, slides, and throw pillows to lay out on your bed and / or couch, all released Wednesday night.
This drop is divided into two sections: the competing “Melting” and “Saucy” collections. The first is inspired by the band’s recent single “Butter,” which means merch with chunks of butter oozing through McNuggets, fries and soda cups. Your dietitian probably won’t be happy, but the combination is BTS approved. When I asked the group if food has just been in our brains lately, group member Jung Kook said, “Food has always been on our minds. Our favorite foods these days are the BTS meal and butter. It’s time to rethink the old heavy food pyramid! The Saucy collection, meanwhile, features anthropomorphic burgers, ice cream cones and fries hand-drawn by BTS members. Cute little creatures appear alone and together on bags, t-shirts, key chains and these throw pillows. (Both collections are available now on WeVerse.)
The gigantic response to the meal comes as little surprise to the members of BTS, who see it simply as further proof of their status as the top of the world. “We are thrilled and happy to see so many people enjoying it so much,” Jimin said. “It’s just another example of our connection to people around the world.” When asked what he thought of the reaction so far, J-Hope said, “I recommend having the BTS meal for dinner today!”
