New Marvel Superhero Simu Liu Has New Super Watch
welcome to Watches of the week, where we’ll follow the rarest, craziest and most coveted watches spotted on celebrities.
There is a point in every great superhero’s character arc where things start to go off the rails. They lost a battle and their confidence in the face of a seemingly insurmountable enemy. They all get sad and mopey. Then they return to the lab, train and Eat Pray Love until you unlock a new, more powerful power. Last night at the London screening of Shang-Chi and the legend of the ten rings, star Simu Liu has arrived with a deadly new power: a mind-blowing watch.
Simu Liu’s IWC Portugieser Chronograph
So far, we haven’t seen Liu, who plays the incumbent Shang-Chi, wearing many watches – and the ones we have seen, were mostly quartz pieces. Which (no shade!) Aren’t as expensive or technically impressive as their mechanical counterparts. They are certainly not as impressive as this 18k gold IWC Portugieser. The numbers and hands of the watch are also made of precious metal and the strap is made of alligator leather.
Liu’s character in Shang-Chi is on a dangerous quest to harness the power of the 10 Rings, but in real life he seems quite satisfied with the one watch alone. Look at this shaka!
John Cena’s Rolex Explorer II
Cena appears to be wearing one of the reworked Rolex watches for 2021. In typical Rolex fashion, the brand hasn’t spoiled the Explorer’s success – the move to sleek matte black on the hands and indexes is perhaps the most notable new touch. Yet the Explorer remains a rugged sports watch, originally designed for caving, but now a red carpet-ready accessory. Not all that different from a career pivot of Cena, who went from wrestling to acting A-list in no time.
Richard Mille RM-011 by James Harden
Average buds buy themselves a bottle of liquor for their birthdays. But James Harden and Russell Westbrook aren’t average heads, at least in terms of income. So Russ celebrated Harden’s 32nd birthday by giving his brother in Big Fits some flash in the form of a Richard Mille RM-011. It’s a little karmic comeback for Harden: he has long given other friends Richard Mille watches for their birthdays.
Gianluigi Donnarumma’s Rolex GMT-Master II
One cannot fault Gianlugi Donnarumma for wanting to make a good impression when he is introduced to the fans of his new team, Paris Saint-Germain. The PSG goalkeeper wore a radical GMT-Master II that uses different colored sapphires for its two-tone bezel. In 2007, Rolex revamped the GMT-Master and added modern touches to it, such as a ceramic dial and green 24-hour hands. As part of this redesign, a few high-end versions of the GMT were released, including this one on Donnarumma’s wrist.
Rolex Day-Date from YG
Few rappers have really chosen their personal style like YG. He regularly wears tiny cat-eye sunglasses, Dickies, red bandanas, and hard-bottomed shoes. Typically associated with its unique look? Almost always a variation of a golden day-date. Sometimes the watch is glossy or comes with a crimson dial. But recently, while in Los Angeles, he remained extremely classic with this gold-on-gold-on-gold variation of the Day-Date.
