Patek Philippe puts the aquanaut in the spotlight
welcome to Always on time, where we’re always there when you call with the world’s most exciting new watches.
The watch: an assortment of new Patek Philippe Aquanauts.
The only best thing about this watch: there are seven!
The backstory: The more sporty lines of Patek Philippe, the Nautilus and the Aquanaut, are undergoing major changes. As the Nautilus’ most beloved model, the 5711, makes one final victory lap in 2021 before being completely abandoned, Patek puts its younger brother in the spotlight. And Patek puts the Aquanaut on the map with a bang: there is Seven new parts in total to choose from.
The Aquanaut is the watch that truly embraces its rugged, sporty roots as a watch designed to bring a younger customer into the fold. More than 20 years after the launch of the Nautilus in 1997, Patek needed an even more casual watch for a clientele obsessed with sports watches. The watch is clearly inspired by the Nautilus but its telltale sign is its bumpy rubber strap which reflects the pattern of the dial. The watch cleans up with the best of them, however. Take, for example, the new chronograph models, which have only been available in stainless steel since their debut in 2018. Now a pair of Aquanauts in “midnight blue” and “khaki green” arrive in white gold cases. .
The truly exciting pieces, in tune with the rest of the watchmaking world, are finished on the technically feminine side. Patek has completely redesigned what he calls his Aquanaut Luce. The watches are a bit larger, which is ideal for men who want to squeeze into the feminine aisle, and are carefully outlined with bling. (They’re not calling the Luce line, which means “light” in Italian, for nothing.) Of the five new pieces, three are in stainless steel, two in rose gold, and all feature a bezel set with diamonds. The two highlights, for me, are the versions of the watch in black and that khaki green – mirrored standard options on the men’s side – now fitted with bling-out bezels. I mean can’t you imagine Drake, who hasn’t shied away from womens pieces in the past, and Cardi B proudly wears these watches?
Share the spotlight: Earlier this year, following the announcement that Patek would hand the ax to the 5711, the brand’s president explained his annoyance with the model. “We cannot put a single watch at the top of our pyramid,” said company president Thierry Stern. New York Times. The 5711, in other words, got too big for her panties. Completing production on the 5711 is one way to leave more room for other watches to shine, and the biggest beneficiary of that space for now is expected to be the Aquanaut. The two have always been linked as ‘sporty’ models, compared to the brand’s other very complicated and valuable perpetual calendars and minute repeaters. The two masculine Aquanauts in particular should appeal to customers who adored the simplicity of the 5711: the elastic band is more relaxed than any other Patek watch, but the white gold case balances the scales.
