Pete Davidson is all dressed up with places to go
It seems like not too long ago the fashion conversation around Pete Davidson was all about how a guy who couldn’t stop wearing Bape camo shorts was killing him on the dating scene. At least part of this sentence has changed. Imagine telling this to someone back then: Pete Davidson arrived on the red carpet at the White House Correspondents’ Dinner wearing a suit, arm in arm with his new girlfriend Kim Kardashian. Delightfully, the most unexpected part of this sentence might still be “wearing a suit.”
Every time Davidson appears in costume, it’s a big deal. After all, the actor is always the most comfortable with the products of the sandwich shop the night of his appointment. Davidson’s choice on Saturday night was even more surprising because of the type of suit he wore: Unlike many of the suits our hottest stars have been craving lately, Davidson has gone skinny. Even the skinny tie evokes a certain nostalgia for the appearance of the skinny suit, courtesy of then-Dior designer Hedi Slimane, and his rock n’ roll-inspired looks. While in recent years the skinny suit has given way to the slouchy Armani and purposely Bad Suits, Pete reminds us that sometimes a sleek, slim black number is just the thing.
It’s still Davidson, though, and he’s managed to put some flair into his standard black suit. The sunglasses are a celeb power gesture – a nice reminder that it doesn’t necessarily belong to the politicians and goofy press that fill this event. And Davidson apparently knows what Frank Ocean learned a long time ago: always wear Vans to events with the president.
Recently, Davidson has ditched the deli merchandise and sought out the suit more often. Whether it’s part of the growth or the Kim Kardashian effect, we hope the trend continues.
