Playstation channels and Wakanda suits: 2021 NFL draft could have been the sleekest yet

There isn’t a long history of good NFL Draft combinations. Think Brett Favre’s country chic in 1991, sitting on his bed in denim shorts, or Keyshawn Johnson’s flowing white arrangement in 1996. For the past decade, two-tone trims were all the rage: Trent Richardson in a horrible brown around his lapels in 2012 and Dante Fowler in 2015 with bad backhands and a double bow tie disaster. From aggressive, out of touch stripes to unusually bland pattern choices, soccer players are often our scariest fashion offenders.

The bar is sometimes in hell. However, over the years, talent innovates. And during last night’s 2021 NFL Draft, we saw more modern frills that could turn the event into the red carpet fashion runway the NFL aspires to. Football can also be stylish. At least this year’s crop of players are trying to prove they’re part of the conversation. There is nothing braver than LaKeith Stanfield’s titillating Oscar jumpsuit. But, the boys try … for the most part. (The less said here about the much-vaunted class of quarterbacks, most of whom came dressed to kill the local prom, the better.)

Trey Lance, the No.3 pick this year, told me ahead of the draft that he didn’t want to overdo his looks. Basic was doing well for him. “I’ve been looking at my costume hanging in my closet for a few weeks now,” he says. He came with Christian Louboutin moccasins, a dazzling Cartier watch and a navy blue finish on the suit with darker lapels and designed by the bespoke company Pantheon Limited. “It’s nothing too crazy, though. It’s not really my personality. I saw the Jaire Alexander costume a few years ago and he had a red version of it, a little different, but I loved it. And I wanted to go.

A great costume project is all about flashy accessories. Jaylen Waddle’s (Brand Williams’) custom double-breasted, checkered suit was the most unique thing on the red carpet. He mixed up a few of his favorite models, along with dazzled Nike Dunks and an equally loud channel. That was delicious. Her ambition for her look was to be cozy and comfortable. “I’m not going to lie,” he told me. “A lot of combinations are uncomfortable. I really wanted to make sure I was comfortable no matter how long I was sitting down, as long as I was comfortable I was fine. I can sit in this thing all night.
