Ranbir Kapoor on his relationship with his father Rishi Kapoor: “ Dad modeled his relationship with me on the one he shared with his own father ”
Ranbir Kapoor had said he wanted to be ‘friendlier’ with his father Rishi Kapoor as he grew up, reflecting on the ‘formal’ relationship he shared with the late actor and how he was “ closer ” to his mother Neetu Kapoor. The foreword he wrote for his father’s biography Khullam Khulla: Rishi Kapoor Uncensored gave a detailed account of the type of relationship the father-son duo shared.
The Rockstar actor described his connection to Rishi Kapoor as “one of absolute respect”. Ranbir wrote: “I am closer to my mother. I feel like dad modeled his relationship with me on the one he shared with his own dad. And it’s true that I never crossed a certain limit with him. But there is no sense of loss or emptiness here. Sometimes I wish I could be friendlier with him or even spend more time with him.
For Ranbir, the most precious thing his father gave him was unconditional love for their mother Neetu. “He showed us by example that she was at the center of all our lives and our home. With her as a foundation, none of the ups and downs of our lives could really touch us, ”recalls Ranbir.
It was from Rishi Kapoor that Ranbir learned to respect his work. When he started his Bollywood journey in 2007 with Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s Saawariya, senior Kapoor had that “enthusiasm” in him to work. “He had it in him to improve his art, shop for his costumes or examine every tiny aspect. He’s that kind of man; very detail oriented. It’s something that I deeply admire, ”said Ranbir.
The young actor also recalled that after playing similar roles for the first 20 years of his career, Rishi Kapoor reinvented himself and started experimenting with his roles in his second run in the cinema. Ranbir wrote: “He started to have fun with his job. I felt a childish enthusiasm and a certain abandonment in his approach to the roles. Again, this was done with great respect – his ultimate goal was always to excel at what was offered to him.
Like many others, Ranbir was also a fan of his father’s acting. He found in him a “spontaneous” and “natural” actor. Praising his father, he wrote: “I don’t see anyone on the same level as Rishi Kapoor. There is a certain naturalness to him, a certain spontaneity. And he was like that before everyone else. Most of the previous generation actors had a distinct style in their acting, but my dad was very natural and effortless. Also, Ranbir believes his father never let his physique hinder his performance, “See Chandni, Deewana or Bol Radha Bol, or for that matter any of his work in the 80s and 90s, and you will see that, despite its weight, its charm remained contagious. Now with his second heats – Agneepath, Do Dooni Chaar, Kapoor & Sons and others – my dad is taking more accolades and accolades than he ever did in his first stint. Nothing can hold back a good actor.
While Rishi Kapoor charmed his way into the hearts of his audience with his performance and good looks, some even found the actor brutally honest. Ranbir agreed that his father “seems loud and loud, but he is, in fact, a very reserved man.” Commenting on Rishi’s personality on Twitter, Ranbir said, “All I can say is that as long as he’s honest and having fun, that’s his prerogative. Social media is very personal. Sure, he sometimes gets in a tough spot with his frank speech, but I know he has no agenda and no hidden motive. My dad is a straight arrow.
Ranbir and Rishi spent a lot of time together while the lead actor was being treated for cancer. “Just the time I spent with him the last two years, before he passed away, walking with him from the hotel to the hospital while he was receiving his chemotherapy, just walking in silence and being around.” him… Everything went so fast. I don’t know if I have yet really formed words for the impact he has had on me, professionally and personally, but I know this is the greatest impact a human being has had on my life. so far, ”Ranbir said. months after his father’s disappearance.
Rishi Kapoor passed away on April 30, 2020, after a two-year battle with cancer.
