Razzie Awards: Robert Downey Jr, Anne Hathaway for Worst Actor Nominations
Just a day before the Academy announced the nominations for Best Film and Talent in 2020, nods to the worst came out. The famous Razzie Awards have announced their list of nominations for the past year.
This time it’s fan favorite Robert Downey Jr and Oscar winner Anne Hathaway who find a not-so-glorious mention for their respective screen releases in 2020.
While Robert Downey Jr has been nominated for the unanimously chosen Dolittle, Anne Hathaway is in the running for two of his projects – The Last Thing He Wanted and The Witches. Besides Worst Actor, Downey Jr is also nominated for ‘Worst Screen Combo’ for teaming up with his ‘unconvincing Welsh accent’.
Robert Downey Jr shares the worst acting nomination with Mike Lindell (Absolute Proof), Michele Morrone (365 Days), Adam Sandler (Hubie Halloween) and David Spade (The Wrong Missy).
While Anne Hathaway’s competitors are Katie Holmes (Brahms: The Boy II and The Secret: Dare to Dream), Kate Hudson (music), Lauren Lapkus (The Wrong Missy), Anna-Maria Sieklucka (365 days).
It wasn’t just Downey Jr.’s act in the movie that caught the Razzies’ attention, but the movie itself got six nods, topping the nominations. Dolittle was also nominated for Worst Picture, Worst Remake, Worst Director for Stephen Gaghan, and Worst Screenplay.
In connection with Dolittle, the Polish film 365 Days also obtained six nominations. Since its release, the romantic erotica had been shrouded in controversy, first facing a campaign to have it removed from Netflix, later an open letter from Welsh singer Duffy to the streamer that the film “glamorizes the brutal reality of the sex trafficking, kidnapping and grating. ”Besides Dolittle and 365 Days, other nominees are Absolute Proof, Fantasy Island and Music.
Interestingly, Glenn Close, who has a shot at getting an Oscar nomination for his work in Hillbilly Elegy, is on Razzie’s list of Worst Supporting Actors. If she finds a place in the Oscar nominations, it will be the third time in history that an actor has been nominated for both an Oscar and a Razzie for the same role, after James Coco and Amy Irving.
