Rihanna wears a watch ready for the red carpet at the grocery store
welcome to Watches of the week, where we’ll follow the rarest, craziest and most coveted watches spotted by celebrities.
Imagine being a Bristol Farms buyer in Los Angeles who stopped by Monday night. There you are, between the prepared mac and cheese and the potato salad, when, BAM! There is Rihanna. But even though Rihanna buys like an ordinary person, she wears one damn good watch to do it: a gold Cartier Santos, a watch most celebrities reserve for the red carpet. Rihanna, of course, is not “most famous”. She’s not even most watch collectors – the Bad Gal has amassed an impressive line of watches over the course of her career. It has favorite collections such as the Patek Philippe Nautilus, the Rolex Day-Date and the Cartier Panthère. And now one of his watches has gone to the grocery store. Also this week, a Root Beer watch and Travis Scott keep wearing their new favorite Richard Mille.
Cartier Santos by Rihanna
Cartier is the perfect brand for someone as avant-garde as Rihanna. While mainstream watchmakers are obsessed with the movements inside watches, Cartier is equally interested in making the cases in which the movements rest look like high-quality jewelry. There’s a reason she’s become the favorite brand among best-dressed chart tops like Tyler, the designer, Kanye, and Henry Golding.
Rolex GMT-Master II “Root Beer” by Brandom Ingram
Continuing the grocery trend: we have a “Root Beer” GMT. The watch gets its nickname, obviously, from its two-tone black and brown bezel. The new Root Beer GMT, released in 2018, has a more interesting arc than the rest of its soda aisle compatriots like “Pepsi” or “Coke”. Although these parts have remained relatively static over the decades, Rolex has regularly re-equipped the Root Beer. The first, released around 1963, featured a solid brown bezel and matching dial, while later versions featured a two-tone bezel with chocolate and cream tones. The latter is known as “Clint Eastwood” because the actor wore the piece in several movies in the ’80s and’ 90s. This new black and brown is a favorite among skinny NBA players like Ingram and the Philadelphia 76er Ben Simmons.
Cartier Santos by Rick Ross
First Rihanna and now Rick Ross – it was a good week for the Santos. Whether you are simple in gold or personalize the piece with a bucket of diamonds, the Cartier is up to the task. Ross comes with a skeleton dial, which is the favorite Santos of other rappers like Young Thug, Swae Lee, and Meek Mill.
Travis Scott Richard Mille RM-69
I wouldn’t necessarily call a watch with panels displaying explicit messages an “everyday” piece, but Travis Scott clearly has a different definition than mine. Since I first wore this horny Richard Mille watch in January, it has been on her wrist for every possible public appearance. For those who aren’t familiar, the RM-69 is a three-panel watch that randomizes a variety of sex phrases (“I want to caress your body” is one of the more PG-13 settings). Richard Mille says it’s part of a long history of obscene watches. (Not a lie: look at this NSFW Jacob & Co. piece, for example.) The watch is part of Richard Mille’s long-standing mission. As Hodinkee Founder Ben Clymer points out in his latest GQ column: “The most innovative part of Richard Mille’s legacy could be removing the suffocation of luxury watchmaking.”
Jack Harlow’s Rolex Sky Dweller
A great look at Saturday Night Live requires a big watch to go with it. The rapper opted for the Rolex Sky-Dweller, which is like a GMT with a new operating system. They’re both designed to point to two different time zones, but do it in completely different ways. The Sky-Dweller’s inner dial ring does the work of the overtime hand on the GMT – and in a more dramatic way.
