Roger Federer’s vintage-look Rolex is brand new
welcome to Watches of the week, where we’ll follow the rarest, craziest and most coveted watches spotted on celebrities.
It’s easy to get carried away by the world of vintage watches. They dominate conversations in the form of Tyler, the creator’s Cartier Crash or Ed Sheeran’s delightfully retro Rolex GMT. But Roger Federer knows that sometimes nothing comes close to a brand new creation that has just come out of the manufacturing. After his Wimbledon match against Hubert Hurkacz, Federer was seen wearing one of the 2020 versions of Rolex: an Oyster Perpetual with a deep forest green dial. Federer, Rolex Ambassador, is clearly a fan of the new pieces. He wore a different version of the Oyster Perpetual, with a sunflower yellow dial, earlier in the tournament. And if celebrities are any indication, these watches have become particularly coveted – Bryan Cranston also wore one, with a reddish orange dial, to a Brooklyn Nets game last month, not far behind LeBron James. Also this week, Adam Driver, Spike Lee’s personalized Rolex and the Bringing It Home watch for Garrett Southgate.
Roger Federer’s Rolex Oyster Perpetual
The watch is new, but the inspiration is old. The new colorful Oyster Perpetuals that Federer wears are a reminder of a famous collection of Rolex watches from the 80s with so-called “Stella” dials. The nickname “Stella” arose because it was the name of the party responsible for supplying these dials in their prime. Certainly, Federer will have no problem bringing his own provenance and his own patina to this new piece.
Adam Driver’s Breitling Super Chronomat B01 44
Last year, Breitling relaunched its beautiful Chronomat line. The watch originally came out in 1984, inspired by a piece the brand had made a year earlier for the Italian squadron Frecce Tricolori (think of it as the American equivalent of the Blue Angels, just with more mustaches. waxed). The driver’s watch is the Great Chronomat, a piece launched this year that takes everything about the original up a notch. More importantly, the watch is just bigger which is essential for the very tall pilot.
Spike Lee’s personalized Rolex Daytona
Lee has a little something very good for the Cannes Film Festival. The watch is essentially a name-only Rolex Daytona. It has been given a facelift courtesy of Artisans de Genève, a house that refines Rolexes for famous clients like Lenny Kravitz and Andrea Pirlo. Lee wears a slightly different version than the one pictured above: with the skeletonized dial and bright orange accents, it combines a stainless steel case with a rose gold movement. This is not Lee’s first meeting with Artisans de Genève. In 2017, the duo collaborated on a Daytona “Cool Hand Brooklyn” in the colors of the New York Knicks.
The Weeknd’s Audemars Piguet Royal Oak Concept “Black Panther”
The Weeknd joins the celebrity super-team who own the new Black Panther-Inspired by Royal Oak. He now shares the honor with LeBron James, Draymond Green and footballers Neymar, Virgil Van Dijk and Memphis Depay. This watch is quite limited, so these athletes are a significant part of all Black Panther Royal Oaks around the world.
As the Weeknd showed on his Instagram story, the watch even arrives in a box that looks like it should contain Wakanda’s latest tech.
Gareth Southgate’s Big Bang E UEFA Euro 2020
It’s kind of like wearing a band’s T-shirt to their gig, but Southgate probably won a pass for this one. The England national team manager took the Three Lions to the Euro final and led his team to victory over Denmark wearing this special Big Bang edition. The smartwatch bezel features the flags of the 12 countries that were originally scheduled to host the tournament before the pandemic (Dublin was forced to forgo its hosting functions, so technically the event covered 11 countries). The watch is dedicated to tracking tournament matches and is able to display live times as well as goals, penalties and substitutions. Now Southgate will know with absolute certainty what time to come home.
