There has never been a better time to dress like a retro soccer star. Designer Grace Wales Bonner has made a name for herself taking sportswear from the ordinary to the sublime, including her burning partnership with Adidas. (Jon Tietz, fashion editor at GQ, swears by this vintage-inspired swimsuit from the collection – and he’s not the only GQ staff member to do so.) The Adidas Samba, a Low-key trainer beloved by indoor football players, appears on the feet of avant-garde guys with increasing frequency. And now, New York-based new-wave prep brand Rowing Blazers has teamed up with English sportswear brand Umbro on a mood-boosting capsule.
The collaboration features classic Umbro styles reimagined with the Rowing Blazers lens in bright colors and bold patterns. This means stripes in eye-catching primary colors, zigzags of blue and red, and strong plaid prints. At the heart of the collection are a coach jacket, jersey and perhaps the most iconic of Umbro styles: the football shorts.
The partnership comes to you through Greenhouse, Foot Locker’s “incubator” program that combines long-standing brands with newer labels. He has previously rendered projects between designer Anwar Carrots and Crocs, Rhude and Starter, Alife and Reebok, among others. This pairing of a young, preppy brand like Rowing Blazers and an ever classic football label like Umbro is perfect in this world.
This collection will be available on March 26 via Rowing Blazers and the Greenhouse app, and will be available in Foot Locker stores next month. There’s a good reason everyone from British rock stars of the 1990s to the editors of GQ chose to dress like a football star: the look is timelessly cool. And if you’ve always wanted to try on a pair of super stylish size football shorts, this collaboration is a great place to start.
