Samantha Ruth Prabhu ‘absolutely loved’ Badhaai Do by Rajkummar Rao and Bhumi Pednekar: ‘An important story…’
Samantha Ruth Prabhu spent her Monday afternoon watching Badhaai Do, starring Rajkummar Rao and Bhumi Pednekar. After watching the movie, Samantha took to Instagram and wrote, “Loved Badhaai Do. An important story brilliantly told with exceptional performances. Love is love.”
Following its release in OTT, Badhaai Do found a new lease of life. The film revolves around Rajkummar as a gay cop and Bhumi as a lesbian PE teacher. It also deals with the topic of lavender marriage.
Earlier in an interview, Rajkummar Rao talked about the change in storytelling in Bollywood. “Whenever someone chooses a subject like this, I’m happy because it means we open ourselves up to experimentation. As actors too, it’s such an exciting time because the art form improves. Also, when you make a film on a social subject and add a little entertainment to it, it automatically reaches more people. I have always been a big fan of this kind of cinema, like Hrishikesh Mukherjee He would talk about anything serious but said it with a lot of humor. That’s the way it should be done,” he told indianexpress.com.
Indian Express film critic Shubhra Gupta gave Badhaai Do two and a half stars. In her review, she wrote, “For a mainstream Hindi film to focus on a ‘lavender wedding’ in a small town, it takes work. And Badhaai Do feels a bit radical in some of the things it manages to do, given the constraints of wanting to inhabit the family entertainment space. The instant recognition of someone on the same side of the spectrum, the sexual charge in an exchange of glances between two young women, and the irresistible desire to be physically together, is done with welcome frankness. But then Badhaai Do falls into the same trap as the movies that “brave subjects” gravitate towards. Once it’s out, it begins to develop cold feet and wraps its crucial core under layers of heavy humor and the annoying uproar of a shared family we’ve seen time and time again.
Badhaai Do is streaming on Netflix.
