Serena Williams on wearing matching outfits with Olympia, inspirational jewelry and more

[ad_1]

“I’m afraid of cats and my husband just had one,” says Serena Williams. We are chatting on Zoom about his new jewelry partnership with Zales when the furry animal slowly approaches the tennis champion. Despite 23 Grand Slam titles and a life of female athletes around the world, she is visibly surprised. Although not many people can identify with the GOAT, it is humbling to know that she suffers from mild ailurophobia. “All I can see is a tiger.”

But fear isn’t something Williams is known for, on or off the pitch. Her tycoon mindset includes Nike sponsorships, a fashion brand S by Serena (which debuted at NYFW in 2019), and even a venture capital fund called Serena Ventures that “invests in companies that embrace diverse leadership, individual empowerment, creativity and opportunity ”. Her inclusive empire truly knows no bounds, and she expands even further with Serena Williams Jewelry. No stranger to diamonds – just look at Williams on every red carpet – her eponymous jewelry brand is meant to inspire its wearer with meaningful statements like “Unstoppable” and “Queen,” meaning words from encouragement that we would love to hear from Williams herself.

After the Fear of Cats, ELLE.com spoke with Williams about her partnership with Zales (who will be Serena Williams Jewelry’s exclusive U.S. retailer from August 24), how her daughter Olympia’s tennis lessons are going, and more. .

What made you want to partner with Zales?

It was literally a dream partnership. In fact, I have been a long-time Zales customer. In fact, there are rings that I wore on the court and they became my winning rings. I got so many compliments on them. It’s just this long relationship. I always start with an end goal and then I have work to achieve that goal. When I started the Serena Williams jewelry collection, one of my goals was to be in Zales. It was really exciting to be able to reach it.

Do you have a favorite piece from the collection?

It’s so difficult because I love “Unstoppable”, it’s a must-have for us. But I also really like the word pieces. These are the ones that I always wear in the field, like “Great” or “Queen”, just little reminders of “yeah, I get it”.

Are there any similarities between getting ready for a photoshoot and a tennis match? How do you prepare yourself mentally?

Honestly, shoots are generally easier. You don’t have to break your neck or your leg.

Your engagement ring is a wonder. Did you participate in his choice?

Well, behind the scenes my husband wasn’t supposed to know that. But yeah, I said to my friends, “Okay, this is what I need in case someone asks me.”

Did your style change after you became a mom?

No. It’s so interesting, my style has always been trendy, but with classics. I love trends, but I don’t want to be like, “Dude, do you remember the 2000s?” Everyone looked like this. “With trends, I always try to add something classic, so it goes really well. It’s been my idea and my method for a very long time.

What are your favorite looks at the moment?

We have been stuck at home for so long and I have become super comfortable. It’s been just this whole comfortable phase. But now people go out, or they go out, and then you had to have some really amazing outfits. And now I’m like, “I’m going to stay again. So maybe an exit high or a sustaining low?

You and your daughter often wear matching outfits, and you’ve already said that she is your mini me. Is there something she does that is completely different from you?

She’s talkative. I have never been the most talkative person. She sure didn’t get that from me, but everything else did. She’s very tenacious and she has this amazing mind, too [laughs]. But literally she’s a carbon copy of myself. She gets too frustrated. We all know I am frustrated.

How are his tennis lessons going?

You know, I don’t know if she likes tennis too much, but it’s something to do. I’m just like, “Stay active, let’s get up, do something!” It’s another thing, I really like staying more active than her. I have it in everything from gymnastics to ballet to tennis. What else? It’s all for now.

People feel stressed about the current state of the world, which is affecting their mental health. In order to take care of your mental and physical well-being, what would be your ideal day of personal care?

My perfect day would be a really nice pedicure, probably a facial, and sitting on the couch and watching a whole season on TV. It has been over a year and a half since I went somewhere for a pedicure. These are the best places, and I really miss them.

Serena Williams Jewelry will be available August 24 online and in Zales stores nationwide. The 60-piece collection includes necklaces, earrings, bracelets and rings set with 10k gold and sterling silver, some with diamond accents. Prices vary from $ 129 to $ 9,999.
