Spike Lee’s All-Vuitton Cannes wardrobe sets a new standard of exuberance

It’s hard to say who has a better summer: Spike Lee or Virgil Abloh. Lee has spent the last few weeks traveling the south of France as the first black president of the 2021 Cannes Film Festival jury. Abloh, meanwhile, released a new Louis Vuitton men’s collection in June and just landed a new one. powerful role within the Vuitton LVMH conglomerate.

No need to decide: their mutual success makes them a dream team, and they teamed up to create Lee’s wardrobe for the notoriously glamorous Cannes red carpet. Double-breasted jackets, hot pink, a sunset-inspired print – Lee went all out in Abloh’s Vuitton.

Via email, Abloh complimented on how Lee “changed the way we think about cinema.” He added: “The opportunity to collaborate with him on his historic role as the first black president of the Cannes Film Festival jury was an honor. We created a story, starting with the fuchsia costume and ending with the Sunset costume which we felt was a perfect and beautiful way to end the festival. Spike has a keen eye for fashion and isn’t afraid to make bold choices. Abloh has made his Vuitton perhaps the first brand to wear if you need to be chic and fun. Remember when Timothée Chalamet wore that glittering Vuitton harness to the 2019 Golden Globes, or Kanye West wore a mint green suit at the 2Chainz wedding in 2018 with tap dancing.

Below, check out a triumvirate of custom looks as well as sketches of Abloh’s looks. In between those pieces, Lee wore a number of archival pieces from Abloh’s previous Vuitton collections, such as a tuxedo jacket with the NBA logo featured in a houndstooth print. Fingers crossed that a costume drama directed by Lee with Abloh clothes is in the works.

July 6: Opening ceremony

Lee set the tone for the ceremony with a crisp pink double-breasted suit and matching sunglasses. Can a costume send a message of optimism and beauty (not to mention a much-needed note about not playing cool with the matching sunglasses)? This one did.

July 9th : Benedetta screening

The slightly cropped point-shoulder double-breasted suit jacket was a recurring piece in Abloh’s Spring 2022 collection. Abloh gave Lee red buttons and laces and a coordinating beret to give the look a Cannes-level formality. Plus: is this the first time we’ve seen a fanny pack on the red carpet?

July 17: The closing ceremony

Lee’s Sunset Costume – a fitting vibe for the festival’s closing ceremony – is a more painterly version of a printed landscape costume from the Spring 2022 collection.
