The best celebrity watches for self-isolation

It will take more than a shelter-in-place order to keep watch-obsessives away from their bracelets. In March, a RolexForum user asked the group if they still wore their watches in quarantine. The responses spread: “Of course.” “Absolutely.” “Yeah, every day.” And: “Why wouldn’t you want to wear it at home?” Celebrities won’t let self-isolation stop them from showing off their best timepieces, either. There are still fit photos, IGTV episodes, and even workout snapshots that flex. For Drake, a family photoshoot was reason enough to release not one but two Patek Philippe watches, which would either be the gem in someone else’s collection. In this edition of Watches of the Week, we take a look at the best watches we’ve timed since the world hit the pause button in March.

Drake’s Patek Philippe 40th Anniversary Nautilus

You know the Nautilus: it’s the unexpected Grail watch that drives ordinary collectors to shop and wait years to get their hands on it. In other words: extraordinary. Well, even extraordinary is not enough for Drake. He already owns a Nautilus customized by designer Virgil Abloh. And the one shown in this photo is a limited edition version of the already rare piece: only 1,300 pieces of this 40th anniversary model were released in 2016. The watch is embossed with a series of numbers (1976-40-2016 ) commemorating the anniversary, and ten diamonds replace the hour markers.

But because Drake is nothing if not a show-off (see: his jet, his palace), a killer watch was not enough for his family portraits. In another photo with his son Adonis, he wears a Patek Philippe reference 5271P – a watch with a beautiful black dial and a bezel set with 58 baguette diamonds. There is only one explanation as to why Drake launched two watches at once: he didn’t hide his watches from the world, he hid the world from his watches.

John Mayer’s G-Shock GWG-1000-1A Mudmaster

A G-Shock watch of around $ 470 seems like an odd choice for John Mayer, who is best known for his collection of unique Rolex, Patek Philippe, and Audemars Piguet watches. But since Mayer introduced himself as a serious watch collector at the start of the last decade, he’s been sure to clearly define his liking to include all watches. “I adore the Patek Philippe perpetual calendars hardly more than I dig the Casio Frogman G-Shock – but for different reasons – and if you wear one or the other, there’s a good chance I’ll go. away and I start a conversation about it ”. he wrote for Hodinkee in 2012.

The G-Shock Mayer worn on a recent episode of “Current Mood” is a 2015 version designed to withstand mud, harsh environments and intense vibration. It’s a watch that seems like it can get through anything – a sign of Mayer’s combat readiness during tough times.

Steve Carell’s Omega Speedmaster in Space force

Most people who watch the trailer Space force, the new workplace comedy starring Steve Carell, has likely seen the makings of a new, hopefully funny show that will help kill a few hours in quarantine. Watch obsessives saw something else: an Omega Speedmaster. Congratulations to whoever put together the costumes for Space force, because the show nailed at least that detail. Since the 1960s, NASA has issued Omega Speedmasters to all of its astronauts. The watch’s ultra-precise chronograph feature has saved real-life missions, but Carell seems like it needs more than a stopwatch to get it out of it.

21 Patek Philippe Aquanaut de Savage

Long live the photo in form. Cartier glasses, a tie-dye Palm Angels hoodie and a navy Aquanaut – 21 looks like he could be an apprentice in a Uncut gems called suite 2 uncut gems. If you’re going to wear a $ 40,000 watch with a tracksuit while still self-isolating, the Aquanaut is really the only choice. The rubber strap model is the most relaxed in the Patek Philippe range – think of it as the sporty little brother of the Nautilus.

Rolex GMT-Master by Jimmy O. Yang

Last week we featured a list of parts handpicked by watch dealer and expert Eric Wind. He shared a story about helping the director of Crazy Rich Asians find a Rolex Cosmograph Daytona for a scene from the movie. Wind’s connection to the film runs deeper, however. After filming, the author of the book matched Wind and Jimmy O. Yang, one of the supporting actors in the film. Wind wrote that Yang was looking for a Rolex GMT-Master, a watch that would help the comedian track multiple time zones as he roamed the country on a book tour. Hodinkee first spotted the watch on Yang’s wrist during her new comedy special Good deal.
