The watches: Fears’s Archival 1930 and Archival 1930 Petite Seconde

The only best thing about this watch: You won’t find a cooler brand than Fears.

The backstory: British watch company Fears celebrates its 175th anniversary. The brand is gaining momentum, as it should, as it hasn’t exactly taken the easiest route to get here. Edwin Fear founded the company in 1846, and things ran smoothly for about 130 years, then affordable quartz watches became mainstream in the 1970s, wiping out huge swathes of the industry, including Fears. The brand went dark in 1976 and stayed on the ice until 2016, when Fear’s great-great-great-grandson Nicholas Bowman-Scargill rebooted it.

Today, five years later, the brand digs in its archives for a pair of very beautiful rectangular watches. The two Archival 1930 watches (one with a seconds counter and the other without) are based on a Fears model made in — it’s true — 1930. Tank-style watches were perfect back then, and they’re perfect now for a watch culture that increasingly appreciates parts that aren’t round. But Fears, who knows a thing or two about bringing things back from the past, didn’t just bring back an old style for this watch – it replicated the movements inside, which date back to the 1930s (for this one. with the sub-dial) and the 1960s (the one without). These watches use unsold movements that were developed up to nine decades ago. The gold border that surrounds the timer of the watch is a pretty and glamorous touch.

Dawn of the Dead (look): The watch industry is no different from Michael Jackson’s “Thriller” video: there are zombie brands dancing everywhere. In addition to Fears, brands like A. Lange & Söhne, Vulcain, Blancpain and Nivada all halted manufacturing before restarting. The reason for the reboots in the watch world is obvious: it is a community of collectors obsessed with the old. Vintage watches are, for the most part, more desirable than new ones, and the most successful modern pieces often replicate a brand’s older models. A rebooted brand has a whole back catalog to play with. “The launch of this first watch in the new Archival family is a delightful way to allow us to pay homage to our heritage and our vast archives, in a more direct way, without being indebted to it,” said Bowman-Scargill in a news. Release.
