As viewers prepare to watch Hulu’s Season 4 finale The Handmaid’s Tale, a fifth installment has already been confirmed. The cast, led by Elisabeth Moss, starred in an Instagram video to break the good news in December 2020, a full five months before the release of Season 4, which has been delayed due to the coronavirus pandemic.
The Emmy-winning series, created by Bruce Miller and based on the novel of the same name by Margaret Atwood, premiered its 10-episode fourth season on April 28. It’s unclear how many episodes the fifth season will contain, but the cast and crew are eager to get started. “We are very grateful to Hulu and MGM for the return of the series for a fifth season, and in particular to our loyal fans for their support,” Miller said in a statement, per Hollywood journalist. “We’re thrilled to be able to keep telling these stories, with our incredible cast and crew.”
Here’s everything we know about the return of the show and what the showrunner has said about Season 5 and beyond.

Season five will most likely follow June as she continues her fight against the Gilead regime and works to get her daughter Hannah to safety.
Most of the cast should come back.
It’s safe to assume that most of the ensemble will be back, including Moss, Joseph Fiennes as Fred Waterford, Yvonne Strahovski as Serena Joy Waterford, Alexis Bledel as Emily, Madeline Brewer as Janine, Ann Dowd as Aunt Lydia, OT Fagbenle as Luke, Max Minghella as Nick, Samira Wiley as Moira, Bradley Whitford as Commander Lawrence, Amanda Brugel as Rita and Sam Jaeger, who was promoted to series regular for season 4, as Mark Tuello.
Other season 4 cast additions included Mckenna Grace (The Haunting of Hill House) like Mrs. Keyes, a wife turned servant, and Zawe Ashton (Velvet scroll saw) as Moira’s girlfriend, Oona.
Elisabeth Moss will probably direct a few episodes.
The star of the show directed episodes 3, 8 and 9 of season 4, and Miller said THR, “This won’t be the last time she realizes.”
There is no release date yet.
The broadcast date of season 5 of The Handmaid’s Tale has not been revealed, but with the Season 4 premiere in April 2021, a Season 5 release in 2022 could take place.
Season 5 may not be the last.
As to how far in the future The Handmaid’s Tale will, showrunner Bruce Miller has not decided. He said THR in December 2020 that he had “very different ideas” about the timeline of the show before the pandemic but has since changed his mind. “I feel like after this year is a good time to reassess,” he said. “So I know where I am in the story, and I feel like we’re kind of reaching a pivot point, but whether it’s the end or not, I don’t know. just like it’s a good time to reevaluate what you are thinking, just because the world of the story has opened up because the real world has changed so much.
Then, during a panel in February 2021, Miller said he would continue as long as his star actress, Moss, was involved. “Every time I run into a season I don’t know what we’re going to do,” he said. “And every time we get to the end, I’m thrilled and feel like we could go on forever and ever. I’m so excited by the madness of the [season 4] the story is. As long as Lizzie [Moss] will do that with me, I will continue. He then clarified to THR, saying, “When I said I will do the series for as long as Lizzie wants, it was born out of the pandemic and born out of the work she did this year. She deserves me to write for her for as long as she likes. She wants it. She earned it this year. I’ll write beautiful words to say them for as long as she wants to say them.
Future seasons may be to be determined, but a Servant‘s-the related fallout is confirmed. Hulu secured the rights to the consecutive novel from Atwood in 2019, Wills. Miller admitted THR that “production difficulties” in the mid-40s had impacted the project, but it was still ongoing. “I mean, you’re already laying the groundwork for Wills [on The Handmaid’s Tale], because now I know a little more about the future than I knew before, ”he told the magazine.
