The watch: the Chanel Monsieur Superleggera edition
The only best thing about this watch: Your wrist just got 100% more Chanel
The backstory: In the world of watchmaking, “fashion” is a dirty word. The term “fashion watch” is often used derisively to describe a bellows watch with a lot of external flash but not much to say when it comes to the internal mechanics. And watch collectors are strict followers of this wise elementary school wisdom: it’s on the inside it counts. While it is true that many watches produced (or licensed by) major fashion houses use simple quartz movements in favor of mechanical ones that collectors prefer, this is not the case for this new Chanel Monsieur edition. Superleggera.
Chanel introduced the Monsieur in 2016 as their powerful watch for guys. And so far the watch has mainly appeared in precious metals – platinum, white gold, beige gold, you would expect from a high fashion brand. Inside these watches is a movement made in-house by Romain Gauthier, one of the world’s most respected watchmakers. It is therefore not just any mechanical movement, but at the level of those of more traditional watchmakers. The movement powers a really cool and unique watch with a jumping hour mechanism (meaning the minutes count to 60 on the largest disc before the hour. jumps in the opening at the 6 o’clock position).
We love sports and we don’t care who knows: The new Mister represents a significant change for the line. While previous models were firmly positioned as dress watches, this new iteration is Chanel’s take on a sports watch, with the dial clearly intended to mimic a car’s dashboard. Chanel is also not the first very high-end luxury brand to take its watches in this direction. Earlier this year, Hermès unveiled its H08 at Watches & Wonders, and like Chanel did with this new gentleman, Hermès took its line of watches in a much sportier direction. The H08 is a square, tank-like watch that would be perfect on your next safari. Luxury brands seem to realize that casual sports watches, like Rolex’s Daytona and Patek Philippe’s Nautilus, dominate the current era of watch collecting.
Where and when to buy it: The Mister Superleggera is priced at $ 39,400. Make a friend in a Chanel store.
