Virgil Abloh’s Off-White for Church Collaboration Just Released
So far, only one of Off-White for Church’s designs has been unveiled. Abloh has taken the British shoemaker’s elegantly designed Oxford Burwood model, which dates back to 1953, and given it a contemporary boost. Where the original handmade shoe featured a brown suede upper, the Off-White version comes with a brushed calf leather overlay.
Meanwhile, each shoe is adorned with the Ablohisms that have become associated with former Louis Vuitton artistic designer of menswear. “Special Events” is screen-printed in his favorite Helvetica font along the exterior of the formal silhouette, while the laces are similarly decorated with “Shoe Laces.” Elsewhere, brogues come with a leather version of the plastic hangtags you’ll recognize from Off-White’s sneaker designs.
It shouldn’t come as much of a surprise that the Church’s team allowed Abloh to reinterpret their classic shoes, which the brand’s longtime fans will likely protest as needing little or no improvement.
Abloh has made a name for itself by reinventing the most iconic sneaker models in the history of footwear. In 2017, he presented “The Ten”, his own take on Nike’s most popular silhouettes including the Air Jordan 1 and Zoom Vaporfly. Elsewhere, he’s brought sneakers to the forefront of the Louis Vuitton brand, showcasing the LV sneaker in a range of colors, as well as concocting a collaborative Nike and LV Air Jordan design in 2021.
Off-White for Church’s Burwood brogues are available on off-white.com, church-footwear.com and in Church’s stores tomorrow, March 24.
