When Avengers Endgame released in 2019, it was by far the biggest movie to hit theaters. This resulted in a story arc that was picked up by over 20 films and resonated with audiences around the world. Directed by Joe and Anthony Russo, the MCU movie has become the highest-grossing film of all time, and the directors who pulled off that feat are now on a new challenge. Embracing the new normal, their next film Cherry hits select theaters, followed by a worldwide release on Apple TV +.

In a group interview, Russo Brothers spoke about the subject of the film, working with Tom Holland and the theater vs streaming debate. Cherry, based on Nico Walker’s novel of the same name, follows the story of a young war veteran (Holland), who is struggling with PTSD (post-traumatic stress disorder), is addicted to drugs and resorts to robbing banks to support his addiction.

Anthony shared with indianexpress.com that when they first read the novel, it seemed like a “very modern take on what the experience of war can be, and also what the experience can be like. drug addiction ”. He added, “We have known people, both friends and family, who have struggled with opioid addiction and who have even died of opioid addiction. So it affected us on a personal level.

Speaking about the unique visual grammar that can be seen in the trailer for the film, Joe said they wanted to translate the “stream of consciousness that was in the book and as we talked about how to do it we have started investigating the idea. that stylistic techniques could help us to externalize the psychology of the character in a visual medium.

Cherry marks their fourth collaboration with Tom Holland but this is the first time they’ve worked with him in a non-Spider-Man role. Tom had a challenge ahead of him with Cherry but Joe thinks “he really dedicated himself to this role.” “He was very meticulous in his portrayal of an addict and a person with PTSD. I think he really wanted to do justice to the pain these people felt and the mental health issues they were struggling with. It’s a performance as good as ever and it’s as difficult as we’ve ever seen an actor work. We have incredible respect for him, ”said Joe.

Anthony and Joe realized that after Avengers Endgame and other MCU blockbusters, they were in a “unique position” to get “tough movies made on tough topics” because they had “built that capital.” So for them Cherry was going to be that one-of-a-kind movie that challenges traditional tropes.

For directors who have seen the best time of their careers in theaters, switching to a streaming platform may seem like a big change, but Russo Brothers are always looking to innovate and this collaboration had that opportunity. “We love digital distribution because, in our opinion, it democratizes cinema. What we are seeing with the advent of digital distribution is that it succeeds when it takes risks, ”said Joe. But is the theatrical model dead? Joe thinks the opposite. “We believe the theater experience will come back stronger than it ever was,” he said.

Speaking of the digital model, Joe explained, “There are different metrics to measure success that are not purely financial. When you choose to focus exclusively on the financial aspects, this is when you find yourself in situations where studios become more conservative with the type of material they are going to release. I think digital distributors have done a great job of reversing this model. He added that it’s “easier for people to access digital distribution” because it’s “cheaper” than going to the movies. “They get more stories for their money,” he says. He believes that cinemas and streaming will “coexist” and “they will just improve each other”.

Anthony echoed his thoughts and shared with us, “We made movies for as little money as you could make a movie, and we made movies for as much money as you could make a movie. movie. We love that global audiences are increasingly connected to each other and being able to experience these films, whether theatrically or streamed, together and communicate about them. “
