When Salman Khan tried to delay Andaz Apna Apna: ‘I harassed them with my broken leg, I cut my hair’

Andaz Apna Apna could be a cult comedy today. But there was a time when Salman Khan tried to delay his filming. The superstar who played one of the leading male roles – Prem in director Rajkumar Santoshi, opened up about his relationship with co-actor Aamir Khan, while praising his performance, in a 1992 interview.

“Andaz Apna Apna is a hilarious movie. It’s amazing, the funniest movie ever to hit Indian screens, ”Salman said in the interview, the video of which was uploaded to YouTube by The E Package channel.

The duo of Aamir and Salman – Amar-Prem has become a benchmark for their histrionics and comedic timing. Salman was full of praise for Aamir, as the two continue to remain great friends even today. “Aamir is pretty darn funny in the movie. He’s a chatty character and has all the fun lines. He played his role so well. I’m playing an idiot, ”he says.

Salman also revealed that he made a deliberate attempt to break the film’s continuity so that it would be delayed. “The film is coming out in six months. I’m desperately trying to delay the film. I don’t date them or harass them with my broken leg, I cut my hair short. So the continuity is gone, ”he shared.

Andaz Apna Apna also played Raveena Tandon and Karisma Kapoor apart from Paresh Rawal, Shakti Kapoor, Viju Khote, Shehzad Khan and others.

However, there is a popular belief that the main cast in the film were not on good terms while the film was being made. Clarifying the rumors, director Rajkumar Santoshi, during an interview with Rajeev Masand on the film’s 25th anniversary in 2019, said: “There were a lot of rumors that Aamir and Salman didn’t get along. But the fact was not that. They were very good on set. On the contrary, they helped each other a lot. Although we have read new reports on fallout. So many times, after saying their “Aila-Uima”, they laughed so much that they gave up on the plan. Like the bomb and bouquet sequence. That’s the kind of friendship they had.

Santoshi, instead said it was the main women who had the problems. “Raveena and Karisma had tensions. But during the filming, they were totally engaged. They weren’t talking during the climax shoot. They had gone to shoot Aatish and when they came back they had a fight at the airport and therefore they were not talking. The scene had therefore attached them to a pillar. When they wanted to say something to each other, they did it through me, for example to keep the rope loose because you had to make a hand movement. I shouted at them to speak to each other directly. When we changed the lighting on the shot, I asked the team not to open them until they spoke to each other, ”he revealed.

Andaz Apna Apna was a box office flop when it was released at the time. But the film’s television broadcast, online streaming and other formats wowed audiences, ultimately declaring it an iconic comedy. The film, to date, remains the most viewed across all mediums, with an IMDb rating of 8.20.

Speaking of the film’s journey, Santoshi told Masand, “The distributor was very new this time around. And a lot of people told me it would be risky. But I was committed. He released the film when neither Aamir nor Salman nor I were there in town. We were shooting somewhere. It wasn’t posted properly, nor was it hyped. The genre of film it is about has not been well promoted either. It was different from the conventional love stories that Aamir and Salman would do. People took the time to absorb and understand this. That’s why it wasn’t a success at the start. It gained momentum later.

Over the years, there have been several reports that manufacturers are considering an Andaz Apna Apna sequel or remake, with several new cast vying for the lead roles.
