Why Meghan Markle and Prince Harry are not flying to the UK for the Trooping the Color in 2021

On Saturday June 12, Trooping the Color, the Queen’s annual parade, will take place at Windsor Castle. The event will be much smaller than in previous years due to the ongoing coronavirus pandemic. And unsurprisingly, the Duke and Duchess of Sussex, based in Montecito, Calif., Will not be making the long flight back to the UK for the ceremony.

Meghan Markle and Prince Harry will not be making any trips to the UK this month, a source close to the Sussexes has confirmed to ELLE.com.

The Duchess is expecting her second child with Harry, a little girl, this summer. The couple have not disclosed their exact due date, but Meghan was not allowed to travel to England in April for Prince Philip’s funeral. Her doctor’s advice still applies, as she is now even further along in her pregnancy.

The Royal Family issued a press release this morning on plans for Trooping the Color this year. They wrote:

The Queen will attend a military parade through the Windsor Castle Quadrangle to mark Her Majesty’s official birthday on Saturday, June 12. The parade will be organized by the Households Division and the Scottish Guards of the Queen’s color from Company F will be assembled. His Royal Highness The Duke of Kent, Colonel of the Scots Guards, will accompany the Queen.

The parade will be led by the Foot Guards, who will be joined in the Quadrangle by the King’s Troop Royal Horse Artillery and the Household Cavalry Mounted Regiment. The music will be played by a household division marching band, which will include bagpipes and drums from the 1st Battalion Scots Guards.

Upon the arrival of the Queen and the Duke of Kent in the Quadrangle, Her Majesty and His Royal Highness will be greeted with a Royal Salute and the National Anthem. The parade will begin with the musical troupe while the marching band performs. The flag will then be displayed in the ranks and the parade will end with a second royal salute.

The King’s Troop Royal Horse Artillery will then fire a 41-gun Royal Salute, to mark Her Majesty’s official birthday, from the East Lawn of Windsor Castle.

It is not clear from the press release whether Harry’s brother Prince William and his wife Kate Middleton will be in attendance. (They posted that they had received their first doses of the COVID vaccine.) Technically, current UK guidelines state: “Outdoor gatherings are limited to 30 people and indoor gatherings are limited to 6 people or 2 households (each household can include a bubble, if eligible). But the royal family is probably not limited to this rule for this event.

Although Meghan and Harry are not joining the Queen for Trooping the Color this year, they have expressed their closeness to her and their admiration for her.

In their March interview with Oprah, Meghan said that Queen Elizabeth II “has always been wonderful to me. I mean, we had one of our first joint engagements together. She asked me to join her and I got on the train. And we had breakfast together that morning and she gave me a nice gift and I really loved being in her company, and I know we were in the car – yes , she gave me beautiful pearl earrings and a matching necklace – and we were in the car between engagements. And she has a blanket that rests on her, her knees, to warm up and it was cold and she was like, Meghan, come on, and put her on my lap too.

Harry also told Oprah, “I talked to my grandmother more last year than I did. [in] many years. My grandmother and I have a very good understanding and relationship, and I have a deep respect for her.
